After all, unlike many European colonial possessions, this one lay just a stone's throw away from Spain itself - at its narrowest in the Strait of Gibraltar, the Moroccan coast is only 14km (8.5 miles) away from the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula.

Brett Commaille, partner at South African VC firm Hlayisani Capital, agrees that an introduction from someone you know carries significant weight. It is necessary to find a balance between being at events, actively seeking startups to invest in, and doing desk research. Otherwise obviously you’re not going to do your job.”How actively a VC engages in sourcing startups depends on the stage of the fund. “So it’s been a good amount of time actively sourcing and meeting different companies. About 60 per cent in terms of building the pipeline and sourcing, and 40 per cent of our time is spent on managing the portfolio.”

Nearly a million low-income Moroccan families are due to receive government aid, authorities announced on Monday, launching the kingdom's first and much-awaited social benefits programme. Government spokesman Mustapha Baitas said in late October that the aid to families was expected to cost Morocco 25 billion dirhams through 2024. It also provided free health care to about 10 million low-income Moroccans, paid for by the state. The reforms are rolled out at a time of economic slowdown and deepening inequalities in Morocco, a country of 36 million people. Government aid so far has been indirect, with the state subsidising some goods but not offering payments to low-income people.

In countries across Asia and Africa, many people get around using less conventional vehicles, such as motorbikes, scooters and auto-rickshaws. And there are now many startups worldwide developing their business around the growing demand for small EVs. Another 10 percent of the market is made up of autorickshaws (or tuk-tuks), demonstrating the significant potential for the development of the small EV market. While running a small EV in India may be cheaper than using fossil fuel-powered vehicles, this is not the case everywhere. The high price of electricity restricts many countries from effectively developing their EV markets, particularly in low-income populations that could benefit from this technology.
