Egypt’s wheat imports are set to decline for a fourth year in a row, a setback for a country that in most years is the world’s biggest importer of the grain. Egypt’s wheat import prices are currently close to the highs that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While global wheat prices (represented by the orange line) have dropped substantially, Egypt's wheat import prices (blue line) remain sharply elevated due to a weak Egyptian pound. Mourad Erraguragui, vice-president of the Moroccan Association of Intercontinental Road Transport and branch director of a multinational freight company operating in Morocco, explains the effects of the Red Sea crisis on Moroccan exporters. Shipping companies consider the risk too great, and most of them have decided to make the detour around the Cape of Good Hope. This situation is unbearable, as it represents 15% of the world's shipping flows. Most of the shipping companies have deserted the Red Sea, which has an impact on all exports, but also on imports from and to Asia, including in the agricultural sector." Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is the new term that replaces nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), developed by multinational liver societies, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). A recently validated model presented at the AASLD Liver Meeting 2023 predicted a steady increase in the prevalence of metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) among adults, from 27.8% in 2020 to 34.3% by 2050. About 75 items are to go under the hammer in a deal between Mandela’s family and a New York-based auctioneer. The South African government has said it will challenge the auctioning of dozens of artefacts belonging to the nation’s anti-apartheid stalwart Nelson Mandela, saying the items are of historical significance and should be preserved in the country. “Former president Nelson Mandela is integral to South Africa’s heritage,” Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa said in a statement. “I want other people in the world to have a piece of Nelson Mandela – and to remind them, especially in the current situation, of compassion, of kindness, of forgiveness,” she told the New York Times. Most recently, Nigeria and Germany signed a deal for the return of hundreds of artefacts known as the Benin Bronzes.

The African Development Bank (www.AfDB.org) and the United Kingdom have announced the selection of the Inclusive and Sustainable Development of the Cereal Sector Project in Tunisia, as a standard-setting project under the Room to Run Sovereign transaction (R2RS) (https://apo-opa.co/3U3D0CP). Approved in July 2023, this cereal sector project in Tunisia will strengthen the resilience of the cereals sector to external shocks and climate change. The project will benefit up to 250,000 cereal farmers in the country, boosting their food security and self-sufficiency. Room to Run Sovereign, announced at COP26 in November 2021, is an innovative and highly scalable balance sheet optimization transaction that is helping the African Development Bank lend more funding for critical climate change projects. African Development Bank Vice-President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, Kevin Kariuki said,“This transaction is one of several projects constituting its lending programme through which the African Development Bank fulfils the call by stakeholders at COP27 for MDBs to innovate and scale up climate finance through the Multilateral Development Banks.
