Each day this week evidence mounted that the long-feared moment of escalation born out of the destabilising war in Gaza had arrived. Unlike Iraq, Pakistan was prepared to respond. But they at least blend, in part because they reveal a collective erosion of self-restraint and the rule of law. However, the former head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign relations committee, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, told Iran Watch that the attacks were shocking and badly timed. Photograph: Anadolu/Getty ImagesHe said the true slope down to war remained in the Middle East, not on the Pakistan-Iran border.

The Hagia Sophia, once a cathedral, now a mosque, was built on the foundation of a pagan temple. The Umayyad Mosque of Damascus was built on the site of a Christian basilica — which stood on the site of a temple to Jupiter. Yet Hindus built temples and kept worshipping. Ayodhya is not the only Hindu holy city with a mosque built, intentionally, on a Hindu holy site. They make it as far as Italy, where they level the Vatican and build a Ram temple on the site.

Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel "must have security control over all the territory west of the Jordan [River]", saying he had made this clear to Israel's "American friends". "This is a necessary condition, and it conflicts with the idea of [Palestinian] sovereignty," Netanyahu said in a televised news conference. Seeking a more permanent solution to the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict that forms the backdrop of the current war between Israel and Hamas, the United States has pushed Israel for steps toward the establishment of a Palestinian state. The former US president feels that Netanyahu betrayed him by recognising Biden's electoral victory in November 2020. Could Washington's $3 billion in annual military aid to Israel be at stake?

On January 11–12, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, the Netherlands, held public hearings for the case of South Africa v. Israel. South Africa brought the case against Israel under the Genocide Convention of 1948. Since countries engaged in genocide do not publicly declare their real goal, the greatest legal hurdle for any genocide prosecution is to prove the intention of genocide. The Israeli +972 Magazine spoke to seven current and former Israeli intelligence officials involved in previous assaults on Gaza. Intelligence officials told +972 Magazine that Israel maintains extensive occupancy figures for every building in Gaza and has precise estimates of how many civilians will be killed in each building it bombs.

Cooperation in the security and migration fields between Morocco and Spain is marked by a “high level of efficiency”, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said on Friday in Rabat. These operations resulted in the arrest of 80 people, he said, adding that this was a “clear and obvious” illustration of the effectiveness and efficiency of cooperation between the Moroccan and Spanish security services. Touching on the joint organization of the 2030 FIFA World Cup by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, he said that it confirmed the excellence of relations between the three countries. He described as “very high” the level of collaboration and understanding between the two countries on ways to tackle common challenges. In this sense, he said that bilateral cooperation was “very important” for the security of both countries’ societies, and that communication between the two Interior Ministries was permanent and direct.
