ToplineHouse lawmakers who don’t wear masks on the House floor will now face a $500 fine on their first offense and a $2,500 fine on their second, multiple outlets report, after three Democratic lawmakers tested positive for Covid-19 after sheltering with unmasked Republican colleagues during Wednesday’s seizure of the Capitol. The fines will reportedly come out of the offending lawmaker’s paycheck, and Politico reports similar fines are being considered for House office buildings. House members were already required to wear masks on the House floor, and Pelosi moved in December to prohibit members of Congress from speaking on the floor if they’re not wearing a mask. Either have some common sense and wear a damn mask or pay a fine,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) said in a statement Tuesday announcing Democrats’ legislation requiring members of Congress to wear masks. The three Democratic lawmakers’ Covid-19 diagnoses came after Congress’ attending physician Dr. Brian Monahan warned lawmakers in a memo they “may have been exposed” to Covid-19 from another member of Congress during Wednesday’s events.
