The Knights also announced in 2013 that they would give $500 million to the Oregon Health & Science University, contingent on the school raising another $500 million. Ms. Safier said her mother was a proud product of public schools—including University of California, Berkeley—and began investing in UCSF in 2003. In April, UCSF announced a $185 million gift from Joan and Sanford I. Weill to create a new brain-research center.
