★★☆☆☆To judge from the ecstatic audience reaction to this musical version of F Scott Fitzgerald’s life-lived-backwards short story, it could go on to be a hit. I get the appeal, even if I didn’t really enjoy the show. Compton and his songwriter, Darren Clark, dish out plenty of Mumford and Sons-ish folk songs. It left me unmoved, though. This is a modern myth, Compton argues, it can take reinvention.
