The supermarket chain Tesco has reported that like-for-like sales across the group slowed to 0.2 per cent in the first three months of its financial year, although the slowdown was not as bad as the City had feared. The group’s core UK market experienced a 0.4 per cent rise in like-for-like sales, as it came up against tough comparatives after last year’s heatwave. In a brief trading update before its annual general meeting Tesco has touted a 7 per cent rise in UK online grocery sales. “We have had a strong start to the year, growing ahead of the UK market on both a volume and value basis,” Dave Lewis, chief executive, said. We’ll have a story shortly at thetimes.co.uk/business.
