State should partner more with varsities

The Sunday Nation (January 7, 2017) article titled Varsity ranked best in storing scholarly content served to highlight the resilience and good progress of our public universities in intensification of scholarly excellence and by this means providing facilities for, and encouraging, studies and research as part of the mandate of any credible university when it comes to implementing their core functions and powers. The sweet revelation that the University of Nairobi emerged position 996 globally and was the best in East and Central Africa, without mentioning that other public universities were ranked favourably in the Webometrics Transparent (Google Scholar citation) rankings, places Kenya positively on the global map and plays a key role in asserting the continuous growth of research development and impact of higher education in the socio-economic development of our country and the world. WORLD CLASSMost outstandingly is the fact that it has exposed as false the widespread notion that our universities are not world-class and given assurance that our universities and local researchers are committed towards disseminating knowledge and promoting scholarship. As well, it indicates that if it were not for the underfunding of public universities, perhaps our scholars would be ranking much higher in the global arena. The government should seize this opportunity to partner with our leading public universities in improving knowledge transfer between research institutions and industries across Kenya and the continent.
