A giant Russian super-submarine is due to be moved out of its secret construction shed on Tuesday as fears rise that the Kremlin is stealing a lead in a new underwater arms race. The 14,700-ton Belgorod — twice the size of the Royal Navy’s Astute-class attack submarines — is designed to operate nuclear-tipped underwater drones guided by artificial intelligence. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, has boasted that these Poseidon drones can hit coastal targets 6,000 miles away and demanded that they must be in service with the country’s navy next year. The drone is designed to dodge Nato underwater defences to hit cities, naval bases or aircraft carriers in Europe or on America’s eastern coast.
