A former senator said gardaí repeatedly told him to “f***k off” and arrested him after he expressed concern for the victim of a serious assault in Dublin. James Heffernan, 38, from Limerick walked free from court yesterday after he was cleared of public order offences and rejected claims that he threatened to get a garda sacked after telling the officer he was a member of the Oireachtas. Mr Heffernan, who switched to the Social Democrats after losing the Labour whip, was arrested on the night of March 10, 2016 in Temple Bar Square where gardaí had cordoned off an area with crime scene tape after a serious assault on a man.
