During the NPP’s primaries in 2011 ahead of the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections, Ms Safo beat the son of the current Speaker, Mike Oquaye Jnr and subsequently won the elections to become the MP for the area. Mr Crabbe has said he played an instrumental role in ensuring Ms Safo’s victory in the primaries and the elections and that has created a bad blood between himself and Professor Oquaye. He said: “Now Ghana celebrates Adwoa Safo and I doff off my hat for her, she has done so well. If Sammy Crabbe had not stood his ground for her, we wouldn’t be seeing this today. Up to now, the Speaker of Parliament, Mike Oquaye, is not on good terms with me because of Adwoa Safo but I don’t care because I can sit down and say that I saw potential, I stood my ground and I created the space."
