The proportion of “zombie” companies fell to 3 per cent in December, down two percentage points from last April ISABEL INFANTES/PRESS ASSOCIATIONThe number of “zombie businesses” in Britain has hit a five-and-a-half-year low. That represents a two percentage point decline from April and is down from 9 per cent in November 2012. It also is the lowest figure since R3 began tracking zombie businesses in June 2012. Zombie companies damage the economy because they act as a drag on growth and efficiency by soaking up credit and resources that could be better applied in healthier firms. They often are cited as one of the causes of Britain’s weak productivity performance.
