Free speech is under threat in universities, but it is not just students to blame


When Jo Johnson was an education minister, he said there was a problem of lack of free speech at universities and pointed the finger at students. The joint committee on human rights decided to look into this and our inquiry showed that he was justified in his concerns but that the fault doesn’t just, or even mostly, lie with students. Masked demonstrators bursting into a room and trying to close down a meeting is not representative of the right to protest; it’s breaching the right to free speech and is totally unacceptable.
