The Catholic Church and labor groups lauded the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ move to protect and promote the rights of migrant workers across the region, saying it is a positive step towards an improved labor and occupational safety standards among Asean 10-member states. Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Migrants on Itinerant People chairman Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos described the agreement as “caring and helpful” initiative of the Asean leaders. “This manifests their concern and compassion of the plight of our migrant workers,” the bishop said.
