Vinson Chand’s first apartment in the city was a one-bedroom rental in Kips Bay, on the far East Side of Manhattan, for $2,250 a month. The neighborhood was “a good mix of residential and college crowd,” said Mr. Chand, 31, who grew up on Long Island. “My plan was to buy a fixer-upper in the East Village,” he said. Through StreetEasy, Mr. Chand connected with Janine Young, a licensed saleswoman at Bond New York. He told her he liked his part of town, but was also considering the East Village and the Lower East Side, where one-bedroom prices seemed comparatively low.
