A statement by MEA later said "There is a growing convergence of strategic perspectives between the two countries. Both sides agreed that a free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region serves the longterm interests of all countries in the region and of the world at large. "The bilateral discussions will segue into a trilateral tomorrow between India, Australia and Japan, with Japanese foreign secretary Shinsuke Sugiyama joining up. The MEA said discusssions reviewed "all aspects of bilateral relations with a focus on strategic and defence relations between the two countries." While India is hesitant about letting Australia into the Malabar drills, the discussions may smoothen that particular engagement.

The number of daily commuters on the government's Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses has come down by 35% over the past four years, revealed a report prepared by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). It is possible, therefore, that the daily ridership is expected to be much less than the estimated 30-lakh figure," it stated. This is leading to the "rapid loss" of daily ridership, the report stated. The DTC currently operates 3,800 buses while Delhi Integrated Multi Modal System (DIMTS) runs around 1,600 buses under the Cluster Scheme. It also found loopholes in the utilisation of the bus fleet by the DTC.

Typically, when in stress, banks around the world have been bailed out, ie, external funds (mostly taxpayer) have been used to rescue depositors and bond-holders. The moral hazard question — using taxpayer money to bail-out private investors/depositors — is one that had to be answered. Since then, a number of countries have implemented country-specific banking regulations around bail-ins. Since then, Europe has used bail-ins a number of times to rescue banks. The Indian banking system, with PSB having 70 per cent market share, have tackled the moral hazard quite elegantly.

Residents of Gurugram had something to cheer about as the AQI score was a “moderate” 192 on Tuesday, down from 319 the previous day. The relief is expected to be short-lived as the AQI is likely to return to “very poor” once the weather clears up. The minimum temperature is likely to fall 2-3 degrees Celsius below normal for this time of the year. The overcast conditions pushed up the minimum temperature from 8.2 degrees on Monday night to 13.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which was five degrees above normal. The maximum temperature settled at 21.7 degrees Celsius, two degrees below the normal.

The petitioner, Samriddhi Goswami, who filed the plea through her father, demanded compensation for the trauma caused by the noise pollution that resulted from the construction activities and metro trials at the Rohini Sector 18 station. The petition also sought shifting of the station to an alternative site as the current one reportedly yielded noise levels above 85 decibels. A Bench headed by NGT chairperson told the DMRC to ensure that effective steps are taken to regulate the noise pollution in the area and directed the authorities to keep the noise within permissible limits. Sound barriersIn her plea, Ms. Goswami also demanded the construction of sound barriers around the metro station to regulate the pollution.
