Aasia Bibi verdict: SC gives govt month's time to compensate riot victims

Bench led by CJP Nisar orders provincial, federal govts to pay compensationLAHORE : The Supreme Court has given the federal and provincial governments a month’s time to compensate those who suffered losses in the riots following Aasia Bibi’s acquittal on October 31 last year. Punjab’s advocate general told the court the federal government had approved a compensation package amounting to Rs262 million. Justice Ijazul Hasan, however, asked if a compensation plan had actually been prepared, or whether the approval and compensation package just existed on paper. Several parts of the country witnessed severe disruption as enraged protesters blocked roads and forced markets to shut down after Aasia Bibi’s acquittal was announced by the Supreme Court in October 2018. Protesters had resorted to arson and vandalism in many parts of the country and damaged private and public property in various incidents.
